His research focuses on Traditional Ecological Knowledge and rural development. J.D. has over 7 years of experience as a Senior Urban Designer for large scale development projects and extensive experience in graphics and communication. Mr. Tovey is a Cayuse and Joseph Band Nez Perce Indian enrolled with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Mr. Tovey is a founding member of Carbon Cultures, a company producing high-grade agricultural biochar by utilizing forest waste streams with technology developed during his tenure as an IGERT Fellow in the BioResource Based Energy for Sustainable Societies program at UW. Mr. Tovey is also a member of the Board of Directors for Sustainable Seattle and the Nez Perce Trail Foundation.
